The materials used to manufacture sensor PCBs primarily include substrate materials, conductive materials, insulating materials, and solder mask materials. The substrate is the core component of the PCB; common materials include FR-4 (glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin), aluminum-based substrates, and flexible polyimide. FR-4 is widely used in standard sensor PCBs due to its excellent mechanical strength, insulation properties, and heat resistance, as well as its moderate manufacturing cost. For sensor devices with high heat dissipation requirements, materials with superior thermal conductivity-such as aluminum-based substrates-may be selected based on specific needs.
Conductive materials are primarily used to form the copper foil traces and pads on the PCB, with copper being the most common choice. Copper offers excellent electrical conductivity and processability, effectively meeting the current and signal transmission requirements of sensor circuits. The thickness of the surface copper layer is determined by factors such as the circuit's operating current, trace width, and specific product requirements. For sensor circuits that transmit weak signals, careful trace design and copper layer structuring are essential to minimize signal loss and external interference.
In addition to the substrate and copper foil, PCBs utilize auxiliary materials such as solder mask layers and silkscreen (legend) layers. The solder mask typically covers the PCB surface to reduce the risk of short circuits during soldering while providing protection for the copper traces. The silkscreen layer is used to mark component locations, reference designators, and other relevant information, facilitating assembly, testing, and maintenance. During actual production, material selection should be based on the sensor PCB's operating environment, performance specifications, and manufacturing costs to ensure the circuit board delivers optimal electrical performance, mechanical strength, and environmental resilience.
